No holidays.
No phone calls.
No mention, except very occasionally, in a certain tightening of my mother’s face when something reminded her of him.
He had been, for as long as I could remember, less a person than an absence with a name, a door in my mother’s history that stayed firmly shut.
Fifteen years, at least, since anyone in my family had spoken to him.
