Portsmouth, VA — Firefighter Mark Reynolds never expected a routine emergency call to become the most devastating moment of his life.
On a Thursday evening, Station 17 was dispatched to a multi-vehicle crash. A 12-year veteran, Reynolds headed to the scene unaware that everything was about to change.
At the site, two vehicles had collided head-on, while a third swerved into a guardrail while trying to avoid the impact. Reynolds and his team moved quickly to secure the area and assist the injured.

As Reynolds approached an overturned vehicle, something familiar caught his attention — a silver heart-shaped pendant hanging from the rearview mirror.
“It was the necklace I gave Lisa for our anniversary,” he said. “I remember freezing for a second… I kept telling myself, It can’t be her. But then I saw her hand, and I knew.”
