I looked at Yelena, and the fear came back into her face all at once, sharp and total, and she moved — instinctively, without a thought — to put her own body between the hallway and the sofa where two of her sons were sleeping.

“Auden,” she whispered.

“Don’t let her near them.

Whatever else — don’t let her near my boys.”

“She is never going to touch them,” I said, and I had never in my life meant anything more.

I keyed the intercom.

“Send her up.

Alone.

Her security stays in the lobby, or I call the precinct and have the whole building cleared.

She comes up by herself or she doesn’t come up.”
