Four Boys at the Mirror

“The hair.

The neck.

My whole life.”

They grinned at me in the mirror, all four at once, delighted, as though I’d finally understood a joke.

“So have we,” the bold one said.

Chapter 4 — I’m Tobias

The bold one turned around and held out his hand to me, grave and formal, the way a small boy imitates the men he’s seen.

“I’m Tobias.

That’s Thaddeus, and Torin, and Tennison.

We’re quadruplets.” He said the word carefully, proudly, a big word he’d clearly practiced.

“There’s four of us.

We were born all at the same time.”

My mouth had gone completely dry.

I shook the small hand because I did not know what else to do with my body.
