Leave Mine Exactly As It Is

And now here I was, boarding a ship where the only person I was responsible for was myself, and the relief of it was so total it felt almost illegal.

I kept catching myself performing small acts of care for people who weren’t there.

I stepped aside at the top of the gangway to let a family through and then realized I was scanning them out of habit, counting heads, checking for the one who looked overwhelmed so I could quietly help — and there was no one.

I reached the buffet that first afternoon and found myself calculating what my father would complain about, what my mother would want, before I remembered that their comfort was, for the first time in my life, entirely not my problem.

It was like setting down a bag so heavy you had stopped feeling it as weight and started feeling it as your own body.

My shoulders, freed of it, didn’t know what to do.

For two days I walked that ship lighter than I had ever been and slightly off-balance, the way you walk on land after a long time at sea — except I had it backwards.

The land had been the ship.

The strange new footing was solid ground.

My penthouse suite was larger than the first apartment I had ever rented.
