My father and mother stood in the carpeted hallway.

His eyes were bloodshot, his polo wrinkled; she looked ten years older than she had at the port, her hair unstyled, her eyes red.

“Are you satisfied?” he said, his voice gone raspy.

“Are you happy, watching your mother suffer like this?”
