“I think you do.”
She looked down.
Then nodded.
“Yes.”
I didn’t ask her to explain further.
People can spend an entire lifetime building defenses against old shame.
Naming the shame doesn’t excuse the harm.
It only begins to explain how the harm happened.
“I appreciate the apology,” I said.
Margaret looked relieved.
I continued:
“But I don’t know you well enough to tell you we’re fine.”
