I smiled.
“Maybe your wedding day.”
Lauren made a face.
“I’m never getting married.”
“Then your fortieth birthday.”
“Forty is ancient.”
I laughed.
“Tell me that when you get there.”
She returned the locket after the recital.
I put it away.
Over the years, I occasionally thought about giving it to her for graduation or another milestone, but the wedding-day promise remained.
Now her wedding was three days away.
And I wasn’t invited.
Ruth watched me turn it over.
