Raymond gave me a small, unreadable look.
“I can manage coffee at home.”
He started toward the doorway.
Natalie stepped aside.
Then looked down at his jacket.
“What did you two decide?”
Raymond said nothing.
“I gave Dad some emergency cash,” I answered.
“How much?”
The question came almost before I finished speaking.
“A thousand.”
She lowered the envelope she was holding.
“That’s quite a bit to take out without discussing it.”
“He asked me.”
“I heard him.”
Raymond reached for the doorknob.
“You could have asked us before taking that kind of money,” Natalie told him.
My father’s hand remained on the knob.
