Evelyn stepped closer.
“Kate, perhaps tonight isn’t the time for old disagreements.”
“Nobody brought up an old disagreement except Arthur.”
Trevor finally spoke.
“Dad, she’s just doing her job.”
Arthur turned sharply.
“Stay out of this.”
Then the lane reopened.
Arthur adjusted his jacket and walked away.
Evelyn followed.
Trevor stayed for another second.
He looked as though he wanted to say something.
Instead he checked his phone.
Then moved after them.
The next guest stepped forward.
I held out my hand.
“Good evening.
May I see your invitation?”
