The envelope stayed between us.
Arthur had kept a photograph of the daughter he claimed he no longer had.
Trevor had remembered.
And Arthur was now telling the same daughter to disappear from a White House reception because her existence complicated the image of his company.
After Trevor left, I finally pulled the photograph free.
Younger me.
Army uniform.
Trevor beside me on the old front steps.
I turned it over.
Nothing there yet.
Then I returned to the Mercer binder.
March 9.
Yellow tab.
Arthur’s initials.
Suddenly the date mattered more than the photograph.

Arthur eventually showed me the March 9 page himself.
He did it in a conference room at Mercer Defense Tech.
Daniel stood at the end of the table.
Arthur smoothed his jacket before opening the binder.
