Vance asked:
“Why?”
I straightened my left cuff.
“Because I will not make my father pay for disowning me, and I will not let him benefit from being my father.”
Neither man spoke.
I continued.
“If Mercer earns the contract, it should earn it without me.”
“And if it doesn’t?”
“That should be true for the same reason.”
Vance placed the transfer request in front of me.
“You understand this is permanent for this review.”
“Yes.”
He warned me:
“Arthur may call this defeat.”
