My Father Told Me to Pretend We’d Never Met at the White House—Then General Vance Announced I Oversaw His Defense Contract Review

“Fair enough.”

By Tuesday afternoon, my name would not appear anywhere on the recommendation.

PART 6 — WHAT TREVOR REMEMBERED

The morning after the transfer, Trevor waited outside my office with a paper cup he had not touched.

“Dad says you gave up the review.”

“I did.”

“That’s not exactly how he says it.”

“What does he say?”

“He says you finally understood where you belonged.”

I waited.

Trevor crushed the cup slightly between his palms.

“I don’t think he understands why you did it.”

“Neither do you.”

“No.”

He looked at me.

“But I think I understand what you did not do.”

“What?”

“You didn’t want to beat him.”

I said nothing.
