Evelyn lowered her magazine.
“Clara, must every family matter become an accounting exercise?”
“This isn’t a family expense.”
Julian said:
“It was handled through Vance Enterprises.”
“That does not answer who signed it.”
Evelyn smoothed her gown.
“You have a beautiful home, every expense covered, anything you need.
At some point gratitude should count for something.”
I looked at her.
“I asked who received the money.”
Julian folded the authorization.
“Enough.”
He pushed it toward me.
“Stop looking for a conspiracy in ordinary paperwork.”
