A serious traffic incident brought chaos to the Mexico–Querétaro Highway this Wednesday after a large trailer lost control and slammed into several vehicles in the Huehuetoca area, State of Mexico.
The crash happened near kilometer 59, one of the busiest stretches of the highway, and traffic came to a complete standstill within minutes. Emergency crews were quickly dispatched after multiple calls reported a truck had gone out of control while heading toward Mexico City near the Jorobas interchange.
According to early information from authorities, the trailer was unable to stop in time and first struck a roadside barrier before colliding with at least five passenger cars and a pickup truck.
The impact was strong enough to push the truck across the roadway, where it ended up blocking all three north to south lanes and causing long delays for commuters and transport vehicles.
People who were nearby at the time described a tense and frightening scene. Several drivers tried to swerve out of the way as the heavy vehicle moved uncontrollably through the wet road. Rain had already made conditions slippery, and visibility was not ideal, which likely made the situation even worse. Officials are looking into whether the weather played a role, although the exact cause has not been confirmed yet.
Paramedics, firefighters, and highway patrol units arrived shortly after the crash and began assisting those involved. Thankfully, despite the severity of the collision, no deaths or critical injuries were reported. A number of people sustained minor injuries and were treated on site, while others were advised to go to nearby hospitals for precautionary checks.
The accident once again raises concerns about highway safety during rainy weather. Wet roads, reduced visibility, and heavy traffic can turn even a normal drive into a dangerous situation in seconds. Authorities have reminded drivers to slow down during rain, keep extra distance from other vehicles, and stay especially cautious around large trucks that require longer stopping distances.
Cleanup operations kept parts of the highway closed for several hours as crews worked to remove damaged vehicles and clear debris. Traffic backed up for kilometers, and drivers were urged to take alternative routes where possible to avoid long delays.
While the scene caused major disruption and concern among commuters, many locals also expressed relief that the outcome was not far worse given the size of the crash and number of vehicles involved. Investigations are still ongoing as officials work to determine the full sequence of events leading up to the accident.
