New Soil

Sleep never came that night, but something else did — a strange, cold clarity, the mind going sharp the way it does at the far edge of exhaustion.

I opened the notes app on my phone and started to build a record.

Five years of it.

Banking apps, hidden folders, digital receipts.

Utility bills, mortgage transfers, grocery runs, the down payment, the renovations, the unpaid leave I’d taken to nurse Marlene after her surgery.

Line by line, I cataloged the money and the labor I had poured into that family, and each entry felt less like accounting than like drawing a splinter out of my own skin — the slow, precise, oddly satisfying work of removing something that had been festering under the surface for years.

Somewhere around the fortieth entry, I noticed my hands had stopped shaking.

There is a particular calm that comes from turning a wound into data.

For five years these transactions had lived in me as a formless, shameful weight — a sense that I was somehow always giving and always in the wrong for noticing that I gave.

Written down, dated, sourced, they stopped being a feeling and became a fact.
