Chapter 13 — The Community Chat
It was the building’s group chat that finished Marlene, in the end.
Someone had posted a photo of our landing — the stain on the tiles pixelated, but the pale gray unmistakable — asking whether the third floor had been cleaned, because the little kids were scared to walk past it.
Yvette replied that the crew had handled it.
Marlene, trembling, typed that her daughter-in-law had simply had a clumsy fall, that it was nothing.
A pause.
Then Wanda’s name appeared. The main thing is that Lorna’s alive.
Because when the paramedics carried her out, her face was swollen and gray, and more than one of us heard the shouting through the walls.
It didn’t sound like a fall.
