When she posted her little triumphs online, they were photographs I’d taken and captioned to make her look gracious.

When someone in the building needed a favor, it was granted in her name but done by my hands.

I had spent five years quietly translating a difficult woman into a beloved one, and I had done it so consistently that even she came to believe the translation was the original.

Strip away the translator, and what was left was just the woman as she actually was — and the neighborhood, seeing her plainly for the first time, drew back.

Chapter 14 — The Footage

Yvette scheduled it formally: the owners of the unit were to appear at the HOA office to verify damage to the common hallway and review the security footage for insurance — and the local precinct, her notice added, had been informed.

Marlene arrived in her darkest lipstick and a silk scarf, armed for tears, certain she could play an administrative office the way she played everyone.

She was wrong.
