People are identifying as ‘Berrisexual’—here’s what it means

Read more to learn about “Berrisexuality,” one of the newer terms on the ever-expanding spectrum of sexuality.

Here at Newsner, we’ve covered terms like “graysexual,” “demisexual,” and “almondsexual” over the past year or so, as readers continue to learn about them alongside us in real time.

It may simply be a sign of the times, but new labels for describing attraction seem to emerge constantly.

To be clear, this isn’t something we oppose. It’s not about resisting change or complaining that things aren’t what they used to be.

That said, it can become confusing. With so many ways to identify and such a wide range of terms used to describe attraction and sexuality, it’s easy to lose track.

That’s why we aim to keep readers informed and up to date. In that spirit, we’re taking a closer look at the term “berrisexual.”

Reports suggest people on Reddit have begun identifying as berrisexual, and here’s what it means.

According to one early definition on Urban Dictionary, a berrisexual person is “someone attracted to women and feminine genders and androgynous genders, but also very rarely attracted to men and masculine genders.”

Put more simply, berrisexual individuals may experience attraction across all genders, but attraction to men or masculine-presenting people tends to be less frequent or less strong.

The term is relatively new compared to labels like bisexual and pansexual, but that hasn’t stopped some from embracing it as a more precise fit for their experience. Some Reddit users have expressed relief at finally finding a label that feels accurate.

“Many people don’t know about berrisexual, and we need more representation!” one user wrote on Reddit.

“Now I don’t have to pick because berri fits like a glove,” another said, referring to the difficulty of defining their sexuality.

As one contributor on the LGBTQIA+ Fandom site put it: “Berrisexuality is about attraction to all genders… you can always date a man.”

Described as a micro-label, berrisexuality is more specific than broader terms such as bisexual, pansexual, or omnisexual, offering some people a more tailored way to define themselves.

According to Queerdom Wiki, berrisexuality—also sometimes referred to as Laurian—is similar to pansexuality or omnisexuality in that attraction can extend across all genders.

The key difference is that attraction to men or masculine-aligned people is typically less frequent or less intense than attraction to women, nonbinary, or androgynous individuals.
