Chapter 5 — The Jar Behind the Earl Grey
After dinner I pretended to wipe down the counters, and I let my hand drift toward a small white porcelain jar tucked behind a box of Earl Grey at the back of the shelf.
Mireille turned from the sink with a speed that did not match a woman of her age.
She was across the kitchen and between me and that jar before my fingers reached it.
“What are you looking for back there, Ondine?” she asked, and her eyes had narrowed, just slightly.
“Nothing,” I said lightly.
