I drove Elspeth to school myself that morning, and in the car I told her, as steadily as I could, that she was never to accept any food or drink from her grandmother unless I was standing right there beside her.

“Mommy,” she said, and her eyes filled, “is Grandma trying to poison you?”

I have thought a great deal about how to answer a question like that from an eight-year-old, and there is no good way.
