I want her to see a woman who reclaimed her own kitchen.

Months later we went back to the old house one last time for the final boxes, and Elspeth walked into the empty kitchen and pointed at a plain ceramic cup left behind on a high shelf.

“Do we take that one too, Mommy?”

“No, sweetheart,” I said, and I closed the cabinet on it for good.

“Some things from the old life don’t get to come to the new one.”
