The Gold Sticker Lady

The subject line read: Sebago purchase — please do not contact the main house. And below it, the whole patient architecture of a secret six months in the making — the title transfer, the trust, the closing schedule, all of it built around a single organizing principle, which was that I was never, ever to find out.

I scrolled, because I couldn’t help it, and the deeper I went the more the scale of what Wade had done came into focus.

This was not an impulse.

This was not a man who’d had a sweet idea one afternoon and made a phone call.

The earliest message was dated more than six months back, and it was Wade — I knew his careful, over-punctuated email voice anywhere — writing to ask whether it was even possible to trace who currently owned a specific lakefront property, and whether they might be open to selling, and whether all of it could be done without a certain person’s knowledge.

From there it unspooled: the patient back-and-forth of an offer, a counteroffer, the setting up of a trust so my name could be added later as a surprise, the deliberate routing of every document away from our shared accounts and our shared mailbox and our shared life, so that a woman who balances the household budget to the dollar every month would never catch the single thread that would unravel it.
