“Now,” he said, “you’re going to tell everyone in this room where the money went, and why you put our parents’ house up as collateral.”

Gideon looked at his father, then at his wife, and then he laughed — a short, bitter, ugly sound.

“Because this house should have been mine to begin with,” he said.

“And when you all find out what he did twenty-seven years ago, you’ll understand why I took what was already mine.”
