Joshua walked in wearing a tailored gray suit, carrying himself like a wealthy man expecting to sign routine paperwork.

Cheyenne stood near the elevators down the hall, immaculate, pretending to check her phone.

At the door, Joshua touched Gretchen’s arm.

“Whatever happens in there, I want us to stay respectful, for Maxine’s sake.”

“Of course,” she said, without any expression at all.

Then she walked through the heavy door carrying a folder full of proof.

When Colette set the first hidden bank statement on the table, Joshua understood, far too late, that his wife had not come to sign anything.

She had come to lay the whole thing bare.

The mediation room sat high on the twelfth floor — cream walls, a coffee maker in the corner, tasteful abstract paintings, everything designed so a family could come apart without disturbing the decor.
