Chapter 14 — The Fantasy Collapses
As they left, Cheyenne was still waiting by the elevators — no longer poised, gripping her phone, tapping her foot.
Joshua went to her, and Gretchen caught a fragment of their argument on the way past.
“You told me it was handled!”
“I didn’t know she’d hired a legal team—”
“What happens to the apartment now?”
Gretchen kept walking.
Their fantasy had only ever worked while she quietly absorbed the damage.
Now that there were frozen accounts and sharp lawyers and real consequences, the affair was starting to look like what it had always been — a partnership built on lies.
That night Joshua sent a string of texts. We need to sit down and talk.
