‘The Wire’ Star James Ransone Dies at 46, Tributes Pour In From Friends and Co Stars

Actor James Ransone, widely recognized for his role as Ziggy Sobotka in the hit HBO drama The Wire, has died at the age of 46.

According to reports from the Los Angeles Medical Examiner, the actor died by suicide. The news has shocked both fans and fellow actors, many of whom shared emotional tributes online after learning of his passing.

Ransone spent years building a respected career in television and film. While many remember him most for The Wire, he also appeared in movies and series including The Black Phone, It Chapter Two, Generation Kill, CSI: Crime Scene Investigation, Law & Order, and Poker Face.

He is survived by his wife, Jamie McPhee, and their two children.

Following the heartbreaking news, McPhee posted a deeply emotional tribute on Instagram alongside a photo of the two together. In the message, she reflected on their relationship and the family they created, writing that she had loved him “1000 times before” and would love him again.

She also thanked him for giving her “the greatest gifts,” referring to their children.

Alongside the tribute, she shared a fundraiser supporting mental health awareness through the National Alliance on Mental Illness.

Over the years, Ransone had openly spoken about painful experiences from his childhood. In a previous Instagram post, he revealed he had suffered sexual abuse by a tutor while growing up in Maryland. He explained that the trauma left him carrying years of shame and emotional pain and also contributed to struggles with addiction involving alcohol and heroin.

As news spread, tributes from actors, directors, and close friends quickly flooded social media.

Actor Wendell Pierce shared a heartbreaking message online, writing, “Sorry I couldn’t be there for you, brother. Rest in Peace James Ransone.”

Director Spike Lee also honored the late actor by posting a photo of them together and remembering the projects they worked on side by side, including Red Hook Summer and Inside Man.

Filmmaker Sean Baker, who directed Ransone in Starlet and Tangerine, wrote a short but emotional tribute saying he would miss his friend dearly.

Meanwhile, actress Madeleine McGraw, who appeared with Ransone in The Black Phone, described him as “such a beautiful soul” and admitted she was struggling to process the loss.

Natasha Lyonne, his co star from Poker Face, also shared a touching message online, calling him family and speaking warmly about their friendship.

A GoFundMe page has reportedly been created to help support Ransone’s wife and children during this difficult time.

His death has also sparked wider conversations online about trauma, addiction, and mental health struggles that many people quietly carry for years without others fully realizing it.

James Ransone leaves behind not only a strong body of work on screen, but also many people who clearly loved and admired him deeply.
