Ever looked at the space between the cup holders in your car and thought what the hell is that really for?
A lot of people look at that little gap and think it’s part of the design. Maybe it’s there because the plastic was moulded that way. Maybe it’s just decoration. Perhaps the car company needed a bit of room to breathe between the two cup-holders.
But in a lot of cars that tiny slot has a simple, useful purpose.
It can help hold the handles of shopping bags, take-out bags, or even a small purse strap.
At first, it may appear too good to be true. But when you have it, the design starts to make sense.
Think about how many things fall over in a car. You put a grocery bag on the passenger seat. As soon as you hit the brakes, it moves forward. You put take out on the floor and by the time you get home the fries have spilt, the sauce leaked or the bag tipped sideways.
It’s one of those little everyday problems that a lot of drivers just live with.
That narrow space between the cup holders can help with that. You can slide the handles of a paper or plastic bag into the slot to keep the bag from falling out of the holders. The divider helps keep the bag upright so it doesn’t roll around or fall over as easily while you are driving.
It’s not a big feature. Most car companies don’t really like to boast about this. But it can be surprisingly good.
And if you pick up a small bag of groceries, you can hook the handles there so eggs, fruit or glass jars don’t slide across the floor. If you get food from a drive-thru, the bag is still in place, instead of falling over on the seat. Sometimes even a small purse or shopping bag is safer when that center divider is holding the strap.
Obviously, not all cars are exactly alike. Some cup holder gaps are wide, some are narrow, some may not work well for holding bags at all. Depends on the model, and the shape of the console. But in many vehicles that little space is more useful than it looks.
The funny thing is most people don’t see it.
We drive the same car for years, use the same cup holders, and never think about that space in the middle. And then one day somebody points it out and all of a sudden it feels obvious.
That’s what makes small design features fun. The best don’t always have to be showy. They just solve a problem quietly.
A car is full of little things like that. Some are obvious, such as storage pockets, sun visors and seat adjustments. Some are easily hidden. They just exist in the car and someone needs to figure out why they are there.
One of those little details is the gap between the cup holders.
It might not change your life but it can make a normal drive a little easier. And sometimes all good design needs to do.
So next time you’re getting groceries, snacks or takeaway, check out the space between your cup holders. It may not be wasted space after all.
Maybe it’s one of those little features that has been there the whole time, just waiting quietly to help.
