When No One Is Watching

When she saw it laid out on her screen at two in the morning, Odette felt the last of her heartbreak burn off and something harder take its place.

This was not a marriage that had failed.

This was a robbery that had worn the costume of one.

Chapter 8 — Imani

Imani Hartley was a forensic accountant and a divorce attorney in the same formidable person, and she came recommended by the only kind of source Odette trusted anymore: a woman who had survived something similar and come out with her assets intact.

They met twice, in a quiet office in the city, while the Ashcombes believed Odette was at lunch.

Imani went through the drives with the patience of a woman who had seen every variety of this story and was surprised by none of it.

She was not interested in Odette’s heartbreak, which Odette found, unexpectedly, to be a relief.

She was interested in the wire transfers, the dates, the guarantor’s signature, the corporate expense reports that Dorian’s own company would very much want to see.

She was interested in the fact that the marriage was governed by a joint-property arrangement, and that Odette had documented — meticulously, for six years, out of a habit she had once thought was merely anxious — every dollar she had contributed.
