When No One Is Watching

He arrived late, hollow-eyed and exhausted from a week of night shifts, and Odette noticed that he no longer stood near his wife, that some instinct in him had already begun pulling away from a thing he could not yet name.

After dinner, Maeve rose and lifted her glass, and the room quieted for her.

“Family,” she said, “is the only asset that never depreciates.

I am so very proud to have raised sons of loyalty and honor.” She smiled at her guests, at her boys, at the life she had built and gotten away with.

“And now, my daughter-in-law Odette has prepared something for us all.”

Odette took the microphone.

She looked out at the sixty faces, at Maeve dabbing her eyes, at Dorian’s easy smile, at Lyra’s careful poise.

“I put together a short film about the true heart of this family,” she said, and her voice carried, warm and clear, to every corner of the room.

“Moments that show who we really are — when we think no one is watching.”

She paused there, for just a breath, and let her eyes move across the room — across Maeve, radiant in her ivory and pearls, dabbing at her happy tears; across Dorian, loose and smiling with a glass in his hand; across Lyra in her emerald silk; across the sixty faces of the people whose good opinion was the only currency this family had ever truly valued.
