The money could be frozen.

The reputation, which was the thing Maeve had sold her sons to preserve, evaporated in the length of a slideshow — because a reputation is only the story other people agree to tell about you, and Odette had simply shown those people a truer one.

Lyra fell faster.

Rhys canceled the shared cards, moved out, and filed for annulment on grounds of fraud, and when Lyra tried to claim support, the same paper trail that undid Dorian proved she’d helped drain the marriage dry.

The studio never opened.

The convertible was repossessed.

The jewelry went to auction.

She turned up at Rhys’s job site once, crying, saying she had nowhere to live.

“And I had nowhere to put my trust,” he answered, “after what you did.” Security walked her off.

Rhys took a leave from his firm and went into therapy — wounded less by his wife, he told Odette later, than by learning that his own brother and mother had used him for years.
