Chapter 5 — Not a Weapon. A Case.

She stood in that dining room a long time with the pill in her hand, and she let herself feel all of it — the six years, the coldness, the charity-case smile, the slow erasure — rise up hot behind her eyes.

And then she set it down.

There is a version of that night, she would think later, in which she did something rash.

She could feel the shape of it, the pull toward some act that would burn hot and fast and cost her everything.

She was angry enough.

But Odette had spent six years learning to be patient inside a house that punished her for every feeling, and that same brutal patience, turned now in a new direction, became the most dangerous thing about her.

She was not going to scream.

She was not going to confront him in the hall and give him the chance to lie, to reframe, to make her the hysteric.
