“Why now, Weston?” she asked.

“For eight months you told me the case was closed and I had no rights.”

He clenched his jaw.

His eyes went to the hallway, where the door to Emmett’s room stood cracked open.

“Nadia left me three weeks ago,” he said quietly.

“But that’s not the worst part.” He swallowed as though the words were tearing at his throat.

“There’s something I found out recently.

Something none of you know.”

And just as he opened his mouth to explain, the bedroom door swung open, and Emmett stepped into the room.

Chapter 15 — My House, My Sister, My Life

Emmett stood straight in the doorway, his sweater sleeves pulled down over his hands, his back rigid.

Whatever composure Weston had left came apart when he saw his son.

“Go back to your room, Emmett.

This is an adult conversation.”
