Chapter 13 — The Other Result
Delphine stopped crying.
Xavier looked at the baby asleep against her shoulder, and then at Weston, and he delivered the second truth with the same steadiness he’d delivered the first.
“Your documented condition makes natural conception statistically impossible.
The court-authorized paternity test confirms you are not this child’s biological father.”
I watched it hit Weston in stages.
First the reflexive denial in his eyes.
Then the arithmetic, as the man who was so good with hidden numbers ran this one and could not make it come out any other way.
Then the thing underneath, the thing I’d never once seen on his face in all our years together: fear.
