PART 1 — THE THANKSGIVING NOTE

I set the envelope on Arthur’s old desk and straightened it until its lower edge matched the edge of the blotter.

Evelyn was still standing in the hallway when she called, “Margaret?”

“I am here.”

She came back two steps.

“Are you sure you want me to leave?”

“Yes.”

She looked toward the desk.

“You could call Daniel again.”

“I have already called him.”

“He might answer differently if you call again.”

“I have already asked him why I was not told.”

Evelyn tucked her grocery bag higher on her wrist.

“And?”

“He told me not to worry.”

She waited.

I picked up the envelope and turned it over without opening it.

The flap had been pressed down but not sealed.

Evelyn noticed that too.
