When I came back down the stairs, two men in black windbreakers were standing in the front hall beside the umbrella stand.

Julian stood by the open front door while rain fell across the porch railing outside.

One of the guards held out an open plastic tub.

“Keys,” Julian said.

“The blue sedan is registered in my name,” I said.

“The master lease is held by Mercer Ridge LLC,” Julian said.

“You were listed as an authorized driver under an umbrella policy that was revoked at noon.”

I dropped the brass car key ring into the plastic tub.
