Doña Rebeca sent one message only. A decent wife does not put papers above family. Valeria read it at the kitchen table. Then she blocked the number.

No speech. No trembling. Just her thumb pressing the screen. A small act. A complete sentence.

Weeks later, the house looked different without Andrés in it. Not because we changed the furniture. Because Valeria opened the windows when she wanted and closed them when she was cold.

She cooked beans one Sunday and called me laughing. “They didn’t burn,” she said. “But come anyway.”
