Chapter 4 — The Lunch I Packed That Tuesday

So that Tuesday morning, after I stood at the window and watched him leave the house the way he did every morning, his hospital badge clipped neatly to his pocket and his bag slung over his shoulder, I made a decision that I thought was a small and loving one.

I decided to surprise him.

I had gotten it into my head that what my marriage needed was not a confrontation but a gesture, some small sweet reminder that I saw how hard he was working and that I was on his side.

So I spent the morning in the kitchen making his favorite lunch, the things I knew he loved and never took the time to eat properly anymore.
