Marcus had said, the day of the birthday, tell her the truth without making her carry the reason, and that had become the hardest and most important discipline of the whole thing.
Children are not owed the full weight of their grandparents’ failures; they are owed safety, and honesty scaled to what they can hold, and the freedom to love a music box without being told what it cost.
So I told her only what was true and hers to know: that her grandparents had made their own choices, that none of it was because of anything she had done, and that she got to decide, entirely, where in her room the music box would live.
She decided it would live in the treasure box, not on the shelf, and I have never been prouder of a decision made by anyone about anything.
