Its design, by architect John Collins and the Cheyenne artist Donna Haukaas, takes the form of a circular wall open to the landscape, with bronze spirit warriors emerging from the ground.

The memorial includes names of Native warriors known to have died in the battle — a partial list, because the documentation is incomplete, but a meaningful recognition of lives that the original monument had erased.

Moving Robe Woman is part of the story that memorial now tells.

WHAT HER ACCOUNT ADDS TO THE HISTORICAL RECORD

Her account, as preserved through the work of writers and historians who collected Lakota oral tradition, adds specific texture that no Army survivor could have provided.

She describes the scene from within the village — the confusion and terror of Reno’s initial charge, the sound of gunfire coming from an unexpected direction, the scramble to protect children and gather weapons.
