She saw what the warriors saw.

She saw the soldiers’ initial charge and the massive Lakota response.

She saw the retreat of Reno’s men toward the river, the frantic crossing, the scramble up the bluffs.

She was in the middle of an engagement that was, from the Lakota perspective, going extraordinarily well — the soldiers who had come to destroy the camp were being driven back, their formation broken, their command structure beginning to collapse.

But the battle was not over.
