My daughter-in-law laughed as she gave me a $2 scratch-off for my 73rd birthday. Ten months later, my own son shoved a senior living brochure in front of me and said, “We already picked your room.” They thought I was too old to fight back. They had no idea what I had been hiding.
Jessica gave me a pair of comfortable gardening gloves and said, “I asked Helen what you actually wanted.”
I laughed.
“That was a very good idea.”
After lunch, Colin brought out one more envelope.
“Before you open it, don’t panic,” he said.
“It’s not another brochure.”
Inside was a card bearing a simple promise in his handwriting: One Saturday a month, I’ll bring lunch and help with whatever project you choose.
