Because a child who is abandoned with an infant and then feels she must apologize for finally asking for rescue is a child who has been taught to make herself small, to swallow her own needs, to fear that her legitimate cry for help will be met with anger rather than arms.

Whatever else I got wrong, my daughter was going to grow up knowing, in her bones, that asking for help is never something to apologize for, and that her needs are never a burden, and that there will always, always be someone glad to hear her ask.
