Seven months after our divorce, I rushed into St. Jude’s Children’s and Women’s Hospital, still angry at my ex-wife, only to learn that she had just given birth to twin boys, and both of them were mine. Before the night was over, a nurse would place a brass key in my hand and tell me to use it before my own family arrived. And what was waiting for me beyond that was even more shocking.
Nurse Florence studied the visible change in my expression.
“She honestly didn’t know if you would ever choose to believe her story,” Florence said softly.
“Believe what story exactly?” I asked, stepping closer to her.
“That’s something you really need to ask her yourself,” Florence answered, moving toward the room.
She reached out and laid her hand flat on the stainless steel door handle.
Before pushing it down, she paused and looked back at me over her shoulder.
“There’s one more thing you need to know before you go in,” Florence added carefully.
