Seven months after our divorce, I rushed into St. Jude’s Children’s and Women’s Hospital, still angry at my ex-wife, only to learn that she had just given birth to twin boys, and both of them were mine. Before the night was over, a nurse would place a brass key in my hand and tell me to use it before my own family arrived. And what was waiting for me beyond that was even more shocking.
“What was she right about?” she asked softly.
“She said the quiet room was never built to hide legal documents,” I revealed.
Sylvia’s eyes drifted toward the two bassinets in the corner.
“What did she tell you it was built for?” Sylvia whispered gently.
“To hold grief no one would talk about,” I answered softly.
Sylvia quietly looked away, gazing out the window at the morning sky.
In that quiet moment, I realized she had already known about the room’s sad history long before tonight.
“Did you actually stay in that hidden room for a while?” I asked softly.
