Seven months after our divorce, I rushed into St. Jude’s Children’s and Women’s Hospital, still angry at my ex-wife, only to learn that she had just given birth to twin boys, and both of them were mine. Before the night was over, a nurse would place a brass key in my hand and tell me to use it before my own family arrived. And what was waiting for me beyond that was even more shocking.
“I stayed there for several weeks when I felt I had nowhere else to go,” she admitted softly.
“Why didn’t you tell me where you were?” I asked gently.
“Because I truly believed you would see it as just another lie,” she answered honestly.
“Back then, I probably would have,” I confessed honestly.
“Yes, you would have,” she agreed quietly.
The blunt honesty between us hurt, but it no longer felt like a cruel weapon.
It felt like a heavy door slowly being pushed open after being jammed shut for years.
I sat down in the plastic visitor’s chair beside her bed.
