What the DNA analysis eventually revealed about the Windover people was both informative and puzzling.

The mitochondrial haplogroups identified in the Windover population — the broad categories of mitochondrial DNA sequence that allow population relationships to be traced — are haplogroups that are found in Native American populations elsewhere in the Americas.

This was an important confirmation: the Windover people were biologically connected to the same broadly Native American lineage that populated the continent from Beringia in the late Pleistocene and early Holocene.

They were not a separate or intrusive population from some other geographic origin.
