An hour ago Vanessa had been watching Daniel talk to Claire in the courtyard.

“Who filed it?” Claire asked.
“The sponsor,” the clerk said.
Claire looked at the heavy brass clock on the wall behind the desk.
It was a quarter to eleven.
The final testing round started promptly at noon.
