I understood the shame.
That didn’t make what she’d done acceptable.
“Margaret,” I said, “I didn’t come to your house and ask you to pretend I was wealthy.”
“I know.”
“I didn’t ask to make a speech about my daughter’s childhood.”
“I know.”
“I only wanted to see her married.”
Margaret nodded.
“I was wrong.”
I thought about that.
Then:
“Why didn’t you speak to me?”
She looked confused.
“Before deciding who I was?”
