“How bad is it, exactly?”
“She needs stitches and overnight neurological monitoring.”
“And my mom?
Is my mom all right?
Did she get her blood pressure pills?”
The nurse looked at me, and I turned my face to the wall so I wouldn’t have to see her pity.
Half an hour later, Shane still hadn’t come through the doors.
Instead my phone buzzed with the text telling me I’d made too big a deal of things.
I turned the phone face-down on the blanket, and somewhere in that motion, without any drama at all, a decision finished forming that had probably been forming for years.
